About me
Elizabeth Goldring
FSA FRHistS (MA, MPhil, PhD Yale), Honorary Professor at University of Warwick
I am a London-based art historian and consultant. Areas of particular expertise include: Tudor painting; 16th- and 17th-century court culture; England and the Continental Renaissance; portraiture and biography; and the reception of Tudor art from the 17th century to the present.
My most recent book, Holbein: Renaissance Master, was published in the UK in November 2025 by the Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art. It was selected by BBC Radio 4’s Front Row as a ‘Cultural Pick of the Week’ (11 December 2025) and by The Times, The Daily Telegraph, The Spectator, The New Statesman, Country Life, The Tablet, The New World, Church Times, and Engelsberg Ideas as a ‘Book of the Year’ for 2025.
I have been delighted, in recent months, to have the opportunity to talk about Holbein on BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme and in public lectures at the National Gallery, London; the Frick Collection, New York; and the National Portrait Gallery, London.
More Holbein-related events are planned in the coming months. I am also involved in some exciting new projects, including the exhibition Elizabeth I: Queen and Court, which opens 14 May 2026 at Philip Mould & Company, London.
